Gannet (Morus bassanus) and other waterbirds by Hugh Thomas Shopland of Torquay. A beautiful Gannet in breeding plumage (see detail), a Red Throated Diver (Gavia stellata) in winter plumage (c.f. this bird by Gunn in summer plumage), a Redshank (Tringa totanus) and duck which I think is a female Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra).

Even without the label there would be no doubt that Shopland was the author. This case is characteristic of Shopland's seabird cases where the the rockwork continues right up the back of the case (on some cases it extends over the underside of the top of the case as well). The rockwork is sprinkled with tiny shards of glass and with flushes of orange to very effectively simulate granite (see detail). Nobody else produced groundwork like this. Tiny trade label to the rear. Size 34.5" x 29" x 11" <click image to enlarge>
