Collared Doves (Streptopelia decaocto) by Thomas Gunn of Norwich. Collared Doves colonised the UK from Europe in the C20th, with the first recorded breeding at Cromer in Norfolk in 1955. So something is not quite right here because the T. E. Gunn label on this case dates it to not much after 1923 (when T. E. Gunn retired). So either it is the work of one of Gunn’s sons and a misleading early label has been added, the birds were imports from Europe, or the recorded date of migration to the UK is wrong. I think this is probably a mystery without solution. Nevertheless, this is arguably the finest Gunn case in private hands (possibly only surpassed by the Ogilvie Red Crested Pochards). The quality of the taxidermy is just superb (e.g., see this detail). Size 20" x 14" x 8.5". <click image to enlarge>
